Campaign Timeline: 2017 & 2022
The Mitie Must Fall campaign was created in 2017 by the UK’s Durham University People and Planet Society to criticize Mitie Group PLC’s management of its confinement facilities. Mitie has worked with Durham University since 2010, providing cleaning, landscaping and security. In 2017, Mitie Group PLC was the UK’s single largest provider of immigration detention centers and inspections have shown reports of overcrowding, poor sanitation and hunger strikes. Despite the campaign, the University renewed its £5 million contract with Mitie Group PLC in 2018.
In 2022, a student-led initiative based in the University of Sussex joined the Mitie Must Fall campaign.
